2009 Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes
The United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) are pleased to announce the availability of overseas scholarships for intensive summer language institutes in eleven critical need foreign languages. Languages include: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. James Madison Fellowships
The Foundation is seeking applicants with a demonstrated commitment to a career in teaching American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary level. Junior fellowships are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have completed, their undergraduate course of study and intend to pursue full-time graduate work. National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarship
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is accepting applications for the 2009-2010 National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students for study abroad. The 2009-2010 Boren Scholarships provide funding for summer, semester, or yearlong study in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. national security, but are underrepresented in study abroad. After completion of the program, recipients are required to work in the Federal government for a period of time equal to the duration of the assistance provided under the program. Fellowships in the Greater Philadelphia area are in the fields of social policy and practice, child welfare, education, juvenile justice, and behavioral health. Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program
The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program provides undergraduate and graduate funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply. Students who apply during their sophomore year are eligible for funding for their junior and senior years of college and paid State Department summer internships in Washington and overseas. Graduating seniors and recent graduates are able to apply for the graduate fellowship which includes funding for their first and second year of graduate school and paid State Department internships in Washington and overseas. INTERNSHIP IN THE SPOTLIGHT!: The Leon H. Sullivan Internship Program -- Deadline To Apply: 11/1/08
Reverend Leon Sullivan worked throughout his life to instill hope in a world facing great challenges. Born at a time when racial segregation was not only tolerated but openly accepted, Leon Sullivan dedicated his life to the fight against racism and the economic empowerment of disadvantaged communities throughout the county. His work has led to the establishment of numerous social services programs, job training initiatives and economic development programs that still remain on the forefront of the ongoing struggle for social justice. U.S. Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr., has established the Leon H. Sullivan Internship in his Washington, D.C., office. This internship, open to college students from Pennsylvania, is an opportunity for students to gain access and exposure to the activities of the U.S. Senate. Students are also encouraged to gain college credit for their experience if applicable. The stipend for a 40-hour work week will be in the amount of $500/week.

Special Event on Oct. 28: So You Want to Work in Washington, D.C.?
You're invited to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences three-part Series: "So you want to work in Washington, D.C.?" On Tuesday, October 28, the Internship Office in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will begin a three-part series called, "So you want to work in Washington, D.C.: What You Need to Know." This will be presented by the Honorable John C. Gartland, whose career in the nation's capitol began as a U.S. Navy ensign at the Pentagon, and then turned into a series of political appointments under five presidents beginning in 1968 and lasting through 2005. Hon. Gartland will discuss how to go about finding a job, such as networking, referrals, and personal visits, and what approach to use in an interview. The series begins on Tuesday, October 28, in the Haverford Room of Connelly at 4:30 p.m. The series continues on Wednesday, October 29, at 4:30 p.m. in the Haverford Room of Connelly, and concludes on Thursday, October 30, at 4:30 p.m. in the St. David's Room of Connelly. The series is open to all Villanova students.

11.14.08 -- The Washington Center Scholarship Deadline
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, nonprofit organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C.; London; and Mexico for academic credit. The largest such program, with more than 60 full-time staff, The Washington Center has over 35,000 alumni, leaders in numerous professions and nations around the world. We would like to remind you that eligible students from your institution attending our program will receive a minimum of $2,500 in scholarship support during any spring, summer, or fall term. The fall semester is in high gear and many of your students are already preparing for midterms, but if they're planning to apply for The Washington Center's spring 2009 semester, they'll want to keep our November 14 regular deadline in mind as well. The Jubilee Year of Paul
To inspire a renewed dedication to proclaiming the Gospel, Pope Benedict announced a special Jubilee Year to the Apostle Paul from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009, on the occasion of the bi-millennium of Paul’s birth, which historians have placed between the years 7 and 10 AD. In support of this declaration and in collaboration with the universal church, Villanova University announces a year long celebration of the Jubilee Year Dedicated to the Apostle Paul. It will be an especially important year with regard to envisioning a future enlightened by St. Paul's imagination and to retrieving the power of his letters for today.
