Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic year. The program aims to diversify the kinds of student who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application.

Lily Graduate Fellows Program
Each year, the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program selects a cohort of 16 fellows who are entering Ph.D. or equivalent graduate programs in humanities and arts at schools of their choosing. The Lilly Graduate Fellows Program supports, during the course of their graduate education, exceptionally well qualified young men and women who have bachelor degrees from LFP Network Schools and who are interested in becoming teacher-scholars at church-related colleges and universities in the United States. The 2010-2013 Lilly Graduate Fellows will enter graduate school in the fall, 2010. Over a three year period, these fellows, along with two senior mentors, will communicate and collaborate with each other in areas of research, teaching, and professional development.

#1. Philadelphia Society for the preservation of Landmarks
Cultural Tourism Program Intern
Interests: Cultural Tourism, Arts & Non-profit Administration, Publicity, Special Event Programming, Arts, History.
Description: The Cultural Tourism Program Intern will assist the Philadelphia Elderhostel Program Director with various aspects of programming. The intern will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of tasks involving special events, booking, publicity and other administrative requirements of the program. The Intern will also assist with facilitating lectures/concerts and assist off-site coordinators in managing visitor activities.
Qualifications: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, pleasant phone manner, organizational ability and attention to detail, ability to work independently within a given framework and as a team player. Knowledge of electronic databases a necessity.
Time Commitment: 6-12 hours per week, to be arranged with supervisor between 8-5, Mon-Fri, occasional weekend and evening hours possible.

#2. Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks
Internship/Research Assistant Opportunity
Description: The Executive Director seeks a history, art history, sociology, anthropology, or other liberal arts major to assist with research and administration for a major lecture/publication about Historic Preservation. Applicant will be responsible for major research tasks and communications between the Executive Director and various organizations. Applicants must demonstrate strong research and people skills, and be highly organized. Interns will gain significant applied research experience and understanding of non-profit organization.
Qualifications: Excellent research, communication and interpersonal skills, organizational ability and attention to detail. Ability to work independently within a given framework, as well as work as a team player.

Description: Internship opportunity in the marketing department of Adoptions From the Heart.

Lecture: Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief
James McPherson, Ph.D., the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, Emeritus, at Princeton University, will speak on campus on Wednesday, Sept., 30, 2009, at 7 p.m., in the Villanova Room of Connelly Center. Dr. McPherson will explore the subject: “Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief.” A reception will follow the lecture. Dr. Pherson’s visit is sponsored by the Lore Kephart, ’86, Distinguished Historians Lecture Series. This event is the series’s inaugural lecture.

Save the Date: Kenneth Miller, Ph.D., to Receive 2009 Mendel Medal
On Friday, Nov. 20, Kenneth R. Miller, Ph.D., a professor of biology at Brown University, will deliver the 2009 Mendel Medal Lecture -- "Darwinian Grandeur: A Biologist’s Journey Through Evolution’s 'Tangled Bank'" -- in the Connelly Center Cinema (refreshments will be served at 2 p.m.; the lecture begins at 2:30 p.m.). This is an event not to be missed. On Saturday, he will be awarded the Mendel Medal. Dr. Miller is a pre-eminent evolutionary scientist. In addition, Miller is the author of the acclaimed book, Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution, a lively and cutting-edge analysis of the key issues that seem to divide science and religion. He contends that, properly understood, evolution adds depth and meaning not only to a scientific view of the world, but also to a spiritual one.
