Chemistry Tutoring for First-year Chemistry Classes
Chemistry tutors will be available two evenings per week to provide homework help for students enrolled in first-year Chemistry classes. Please come prepared to do your homework problems, with the added resource of a tutor's assistance if needed. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 p.m. in the South Campus Dining Hall. Tutoring begins on Thursday, Sept. 11.

Time Management Workshop
Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Devon Room of Connelly Center. This interactive program will provide you with tips on how to use time more effectively and efficiently in your studies and daily schedule. You will get specific solutions to be a better time manager with your personal style in mind. Dr. Robert Stokes, assistant vice president for academic affairs, teaches a time management class for teachers, has worked with corporate executives on this topic, and held the position of Director of Career Services at Villanova where he counseled students and alumni. New Major: Global Interdisciplinary Studies
The Institute is an academic unit whose primary purpose is to provide students with a set of skills that will foster critical and analytical thinking and problem solving preparing them for responsible global citizenship. Students who elect to major in this highly rigorous and relevant course of study do so under the guidance of a caring, dedicated, and nurturing faculty, highly skilled in their specific disciplines, who also collaborate with each other to help students integrate their coursework. The central dynamic of the Global Interdisciplinary Studies major is five global interdisciplinary seminars, three of which are mandatory (Introduction to Global Interdisciplinary Studies, the Junior Research Seminar, and the Capstone Colloquium). Internships in the Spotlight: #1 -- U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) and Office of Public Affairs (OPA)
DHS is the leading agency for the U.S. government mobilizing and organizing the nation to secure the homeland from terrorist attacks. OPA is responsible for developing and implementing the Department’s message regarding homeland security and the oversight of the Web site, secretarial events, public outreach, media relations, and communications to all regional offices. Interns will be working on various projects related to the mission of the Office of Public Affairs and its 12 functional areas. West Pharmaceuticals is looking for an IT intern and the position is paid. Duties include: primary IT phone support for West IT Service Desk to end users located in Lionville and remote locations; entering of Service Requests into Incident Management System (Service Center); triage IT break/fix requests to resolution and escalate accordingly; process requests for data and network access; utilize active directory to create/manage/modify user accounts; triaging and resolving basic hardware and MS Office related requests; provide ancillary support to technical support team in performing desk side moves and project work; after-hours support/flexible work schedule; and move and installation of West IT Hardware/Software.

Wall Street Boot Camp: Deadline 9/14/08
Wall Street Boot Camp will take place on October 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sophomores and juniors of all majors should apply now to attend this day long interactive event. Graduates from Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and VSB who work on Wall Street will be on campus to review resumes, do practice interviews, and provide career advice. Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics
Today's breathtaking advances in medicine and biology depend on the fundamental laws of heredity discovered nearly 150 years ago by an Augustinian friar working in a garden. The exhibit, "Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics," presents Mendel's life and work, charts the rise of genetics, and introduces you to some "Modern Mendels" -- present-day scientists who are building upon his discoveries. The exhibit, co-sponsored by Villanova, is at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia through September 28. Admission to the Academy is FREE with a valid University I.D.

Mendel in the 21st Century: The Scientific, Social, and Ethical Impact of Genetics in Our World
Reminder: Register online at the Web site below for this two-day interdisciplinary academic symposium, held on Villanova's campus from Sunday, September 21, to Tuesday, September 23, 2008. The University is hosting the symposium as part of its campus-wide celebration to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the awarding of the Mendel Medal. As an Augustinian institution of higher education, Villanova is one of the custodians of the Mendel legacy. An Augustinian priest trained in mathematics, physics, and biology, Mendel is an icon of interdisciplinarity. Accordingly, this symposium will include a series of engaging speakers in fields ranging from molecular genetics, genomics, biotechnology and evolutionary biology to history and philosophy of science, psychology, ethics, medicine, and law.
