Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics
Today's breathtaking advances in medicine and biology depend on the fundamental laws of heredity discovered nearly 150 years ago by an Augustinian friar working in a garden. The exhibit, "Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics," presents Mendel's life and work, charts the rise of genetics, and introduces you to some "Modern Mendels" -- present-day scientists who are building upon his discoveries. The exhibit, co-sponsored by Villanova, is at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia through September 28. Admission to the Academy is FREE with a valid University I.D.

Mendel in the 21st Century: The Scientific, Social, and Ethical Impact of Genetics in Our World
Reminder: Register online at the Web site below for this two-day interdisciplinary academic symposium, held on Villanova's campus from Sunday, September 21, to Tuesday, September 23, 2008. The University is hosting the symposium as part of its campus-wide celebration to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the awarding of the Mendel Medal. An Augustinian priest trained in mathematics, physics, and biology, Mendel is an icon of interdisciplinarity. Accordingly, this symposium will include a series of engaging speakers in fields ranging from molecular genetics, genomics, biotechnology and evolutionary biology to history and philosophy of science, psychology, ethics, medicine, and law.

Villanova Commitment to Sustainability
Villanova University is sponsoring a Commitment to Sustainability as part of the 80th Anniversary of the Mendel Medal Celebration during the upcoming academic year. Environmental change and the sustainable viability of Earth’s environment are perhaps the seminal challenges to human society during the coming decades. With a global population of nearly 6.5 billion, the global community must find ways of reducing consumption and sustaining our precious resources if we are to forestall environmental degradation and a possible collapse of the global ecosystem. As a Catholic institution of higher learning, Villanova University has an obligation and commitment to exercise leadership in promoting and reinforcing environmental responsibility by integrating ethical, social, economic, and ecological values of environmentally sustainable development into its curriculum, research, and institutional policy and practice.
