The Political Science Department has begun a three-part series called, "So you want to work in Washington: What you need to know." This is presented by the Honorable John C. Gartland, whose career in the nation's Capital began as a Navy ensign at the Pentagon, and then turned into a series of political appointments under five presidents beginning in 1968 and lasting through 2005. Mr. Gartland will discuss how to go about finding a job, such as networking, referrals, and personal visits, and what approach to use in an interview. The series began on Thursday, April 3, in the Haverford Room of Connelly at 4:30 pm. It continues on Tuesday, April 8, at 4:30 p.m. in the Bryn Mawr Room of Connelly, and concludes on Wednesday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the Haverford Room.

On Tuesday, April 8, Dr. Bruce Western, the Distinguished Sociologist from Harvard University, will be speaking in the Connelly Center Cinema at 7 p.m. It is sponsored by Villanova's Social Science Forum. He will be speaking on the causes and effects of our nation's soaring incarceration rates, and particularly, their effects on minority communities and their families. Dr. Western's most current book is Punishment and Inequality in America (Russell Sage). This book details imprisonment's negative impact on employment, income, and marriage opportunities. Leading criminologists have described this book as "a rare and clear blend of empirical analysis and social conscience," and Western discusses the "role mass incarceration has played in an increasingly stratified society."

This forum will address who they are, why they fled and where, what they face, the response to the crisis, and actions needed.
