Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad. Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Deadline for fall semester study abroad: April 15, 2008.

INTERNSHIPS
So you want to work in Washington? What you need to know!
On Wednesday, April 3, the Political Science Department will begin a three-part series called, "So you want to work in Washington: What you need to know." This will be presented by the Honorable John C. Gartland, whose career in the nation's Capital began as a Navy ensign at the Pentagon, and then turned into a series of political appointments under five presidents beginning in 1968 and lasting through 2005.
Mr. Gartland will discuss how to go about finding a job, such as networking, referrals, and personal visits, and what approach to use in an interview. The series begins on Thursday, April 3, in the Haverford Room of Connelly at 4:30 pm. It continues on Tuesday, April 8, at 4:30 in the Bryn Mawr Room of Connelly, and concludes on Wednesday, April 9, at 4:30 in the Haverford Room.

ABOUT THE COMPANY: Vizion Group is a full service event marketing and public relations services company with a prominent array of clients including NBC Sports, NBC Entertainment, Carson International, The NephCure Foundation, the Sister to Sister Foundation, and more. RESPONSIBILITIES: Support person with key responsibilities surrounding the implementation of PR plans for sports and entertainment events and television programs. Includes creation and maintenance of media outlet list databases, research, writing, social media outreach (blogs and podcasts), and some direct contact with traditional media. Must be self-motivated to fit in as a focused operative and a team player. Management makes significant effort to provide challenging tasks in addition to requiring basic intern work. Idealist.org sponsors the event and coordinates employer participation, with co-sponsorship from New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and Commongood Careers. More than 90 non-profit organizations, representing issues ranging from the arts to human services/education to environmental concerns, have participated each year. PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY LECTURER DISCUSSES WORK ON RACE, POWER, AND HIP HOP MUSIC
On Thursday, April 3, Murali Balaji, lecturer and doctoral fellow at The Pennsylvania State University, will discuss his scholarly paper, "White Power, Black Music: Co-option, Commercialism, Commodification, and Conglomeration in Hip-Hop," detailing how media consolidation and the corporatization of hip-hop has essentially made rap music stagnant and has narrow-casted representations of black masculinity. His talk will be held in the Presidents Lounge in the Connelly Center from 1 to to 2 p.m.

Renowned Sociologist Speaks on Soaring Incarceration Rates
On Tuesday, April 8, Dr. Bruce Western, the Distinguished Sociologist from Harvard University, will be speaking in the Connelly Center Cinema at 7 p.m. It is sponsored by Villanova's Social Science Forum. He will be speaking on the causes and effects of our nation's soaring incarceration rates, and particularly, their effects on minority communities and their families. Dr. Western's most current book is Punishment and Inequality in America (Russell Sage). This book details imprisonment's negative impact on employment, income, and marriage opportunities. Leading criminologists have described this book as "a rare and clear blend of empirical analysis and social conscience," and Western discusses the "role mass incarceration has played in an increasingly stratified society."
