GRANTS AND AWARDS
Arab American Institute Foundation
Each year, the Arab American Institute Foundation (AAIF) awards scholarships and cash awards to deserving Arab American students to recognize and encourage achievements in civic life and public affairs. Al Muammar Scholarships for Journalism for the 2008-2009 academic year will award up to five scholarship grants of $5,000 per student to Arab American college students who are majoring in journalism. Deadline: March 3, 2008. Leadership awards honoring Arab Americans under 30 who excel in public and community service: the Helen Abbott Community Service Awards offer cash grants totaling $2,500, and the Raymond Jallow Award for Public Service provides $1,000 to a student involved in government service or public affairs. Deadline: March 14, 2008.

Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad. Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Deadline for fall semester study abroad: April 15, 2008.

START THINKING ABOUT YOUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP!
SUMMER 2008 RESEARCH ANALYST POSITIONS. The U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) recently has established a Washington, D.C., area unclassified open source analysis unit to conduct research related to national security issues and is seeking undergraduate and graduate student summer research analysts who can conduct native language research on the Internet, apply social science research methods to identify social and political trends, and critically analyze and present information. Positions are also available for science and technology majors to conduct Internet research and test new applications/tools. Students majoring in the following areas are encouraged to apply: Middle Eastern Studies, Persian Studies, South Asian Studies, Asian Studies, Russian Studies, Comparative Politics, International Relations, National Security Studies, Economics, Political Economy, Cultural Anthropology, Comparative Sociology, Demography, Nuclear Engineering/Physics, Computer Science/Engineering, Defense Studies, Social Psychology, Public Policy, History, Political Geography, Library Science/Information Management, and Geographic Information Systems.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to conduct research in Farsi, Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, French, Spanish or Urdu (Level 3 or higher reading proficiency required) or significant coursework in a scientific or engineering discipline; excellent research and oral and written communication skills; advanced analytic/critical thinking skills; advanced Internet proficiency; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment; ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment; completion of at least sophomore year by summer 2008 with strong academic credentials (3.2 GPA or higher desired); and U.S. citizenship required; however, no security clearance is needed.
COMPENSATION: Hourly rate will be commensurate with education and experience. Positions are for a 40-hour week for a maximum of 10 weeks. There are no benefits other than free parking. The location is not accessible by public transportation.

Philadelphia Non-Profit Career Fair
St. Joseph's University will host the Philadelphia Non-Profit Career Fair on Thursday, April 10, 2008, at 10 a.m. Villanova University is a strong participant. Idealist.org sponsors the event and coordinates employer participation, with co-sponsorship from New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and Commongood Careers. More than 90 non-profit organizations, representing issues ranging from the arts to human services/education to environmental concerns, have participated each year. Location: Alumni Fieldhouse, St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, PA. Bus transportation will be available outside Corr Hall on a continuous loop throughout the day.

CampusPhilly: Online Internship Fair
Throughout the year, the Campus Activities Team (CAT) works with CampusPhilly.org, a Web site designed for college students in Philadelphia. This week, CampusPhilly is currently sponsoring an online internship fair for Philadelphia-area internships. Students simply upload their resume to the web. Students can register at CampusPhilly.org/Careers through Friday, and their resumes are available to approved firms through June 30. This event was previously titled the "CareerPhilly Internship Fair."

Marwan Kraidy, Ph.D., to Speak on Campus
Silvia Nagy-Zekmi, a professor of Hispanic and cultural studies, is teaching an Honors course entitled, "Introduction to Cultural Studies," which will include a one-day student conference on cultural studies on Saturday, March 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in room 300 of the St. Augustine Center for the Liberal Arts. All are invited to attend. The keynote speaker is Marwan Kraidy, Ph.D., an associate professor of communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kraidy is the author of Global Media Studies: Ethnographic Perspectives and Hybridity, or, The Cultural Logic of Globalization. The event is sponsored by the Villanova Honors Program and the Canter for Arab and Islamic Studies.

Villanova/CRS Partnership to Sponsor a Forum on the Iraqi Refugee Crisis
Two million Iraqis are now refugees, and two million more are internally displaced. This forum will address who they are, why they fled and where, what they face, the response to the crisis, and actions needed.
