Arab American Institute Foundation
Arab American Institute Foundation
Each year the Arab American Institute Foundation (AAIF) awards scholarships and cash awards to deserving Arab American students to recognize and encourage achievements in civic life and public affairs. Al Muammar Scholarships for Journalism for the 2008-2009 academic year will award up to five scholarship grants of $5,000 per student to Arab American college students who are majoring in journalism. Deadline: March 3, 2008. Leadership awards honoring Arab Americans under 30 who excel in public and community service: the Helen Abbott Community Service Awards offer cash grants totaling $2,500, and the Raymond Jallow Award for Public Service provides $1,000 to a student involved in government service or public affairs. Deadline: March 14, 2008.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is pleased to announce the launch of a new full-funded summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for American journalism and communication students. Scholarships will be awarded to 20 students who have at least advanced intermediate German language skills to take part in a structured 11-week study/internship program in Germany. Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad. Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Deadline for fall semester study abroad: April 15, 2008.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarship
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students for study abroad. The 2008-2009 Boren Scholarships provide funding for summer, semester, or year-long study in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. national security but are underrepresented in study abroad. After completion of the program, recipients are required to work in the Federal government for a period of time equal to the duration of the assistance provided under the program. Deadline: February 12, 2008

The Whitaker International Program is a competitive grant that is targeted at sending emerging leaders in the field of biomedical engineering overseas to increase international collaboration in the field. Morgan Stanley is recruiting juniors for Summer Analyst programs. This program is a 10-week internship opportunity that is designed as a feeder for the full-time programs. The Pennsylvania Treasury Department is now accepting applications for its paid summer internship program for college students. A Treasury internship offers students a challenging and rewarding work experience while providing a competitive salary in the Commonwealth's capitol. As Pennsylvania's bank, Treasury plays a critical role in state government operations. Treasury acts as the custodian, investor, and disburser of the funds of nearly all state agencies. Start Up Challenge -- 2/5/08 through 2/17/08
Attention all Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Students! Ever wonder how a new product or service gets to the marketplace? It starts with a business plan. The Start Up Challenge is an annual business plan competition open to all undergraduates from any major. Its an opportunity to: learn about the process; work with students from across the University; build up your resume; network with professionals; win cash prizes; and possibly represent Villanova University in a national business plan competition in Virginia. In addition to what you'll learn from participation in the competition, you'll also have the option of attending information session(s)to help you along the way. This competition was created with the understanding that entrepreneurship has been and will continue to be the major source of job growth and innovation in the American economy. To this end the Start Up Challenge has made this educational event available to the undergraduate students of Villanova University, regardless of college or major. It takes place between Tuesday, February 5, and Sunday, February 17. Teams (three to five students) must have members from at least two colleges (e.g., A&S, Nursing, Engineering, and VSB.) Workshop: How to Research Professional Opportunities
What are you going to do with your degree? How will your studies and activities translate into a professional opportunity? How can you market yourself for positions? Using online resources, you will learn how to research professional opportunities. You will learn how to assess your transferable skills, qualities, and personality characteristics and match these qualities to positions, industries, and professions. These strategies will jumpstart your internship or job search and enable you to market yourself effectively for professional opportunities. This workshop will be facilitated by Karen Graziano, J.D., Assistant Professor, English Department, Law School Advisor, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Academic Advisor, Office of Advising and Professional Development. Marwan Kraidy, Ph.D., to Speak on Campus
Silvia Nagy-Zekmi, a professor of Hispanic and cultural studies, is teaching an Honors course entitled, "Introduction to Cultural Studies," which will include a one-day student conference on cultural studies on Saturday, March 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in room 300 of the St. Augustine Center for the Liberal Arts. All are invited to attend. The keynote speaker is Marwan Kraidy, Ph.D., an associate professor of communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kraidy is the author of Global Media Studies: Ethnographic Perspectives and Hybridity, or, The Cultural Logic of Globalization. The event is sponsored by the Villanova Honors Program and the Canter for Arab and Islamic Studies.
